Who needs the audit?

The goal for every Safety Partner in Plan A is to manage and continuously improve their safety system.

Once your company has demonstrated this ability to a non-bias third party auditor you will earn your Certificate of Safety Recognition (CSR).

Time frame to achieve a CSR:

Usually within six months of initially taking the Safety Fundamentals Course most Safety Partners in Plan A (link to A5) should be able to develop and implement an effective safety management system that meets the Level 1 CSR requirements.

You are encouraged to complete the level 1 CSR audit within 18 months following your initial enrolment. Afterwards it is possible to progress to Level 2 and Level 3 in 1 year increments.

The benefits of a CSR:

  • Effective safety management systems have been shown to have a drastic impact on reducing injuries and costs for employers.

  • As your safety program continues to reduce injures, your workers compensation insurance experience modifier can be drastically reduced.

  • Depending on the size of your company, the reduction of this modifier can save thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. One example of this a Safety Partner that reduced their workers compensation costs from $78,343 in 2005 to $2,195 in 2006.

  • Once your company implements an effective safety program that meets orexceeds the “Safety Partnership” requirements, you will be entitled to an immediate 2% discount on your workers compensation insurance premiums. If you are not already doing so, your Safety Coach will assist you in obtaining this discount.

  • Once your company achieves a CSR many builders and contractors who value safety have offered preferential treatment. If you are working in homebuilding or light construction you should include a copy of your CSR in each bid package. If you are in another industry you should post your CSR in your lobby, office, or on your web page.

Maintaining a valid CSR:

  • Providing that all maintenance requirements are met, once you achieve a CSR it will be valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue. To maintain your CSR, each employer is required to carry out an external maintenance audit every 12 months.

  • You are also expected to maintain your safety management system at all times, and to make every effort possible to comply with applicable safety legislation. Significant infractions or complaints may result in the need for further audits of your health and safety management system. Safety Links can revoke your CSR at any time if you fail to maintain it as required.

  • To renew your CSR you must submit an audit request at least 30 days prior to your CSR expiration date.

Audit scoring and levels:

The CSR process has three levels to ensure that each member succeeds as their safety system evolves.

  • The pass mark for a Level 1 Audit is 70% overall with at least 50% in each element.

  • The pass mark for a Level 2 Audit is 80% overall with at least 60% in each element.

  • The pass mark for the optional Level 3 Audit is 80% overall with at least 60% in each element. The Level 3 audit must be completed using the more comprehensive “Level 3 Audit Protocol”.
